Sanded Grout

DESCRIPTION

ASA Sanded Grout is a cement based grout used for grouting slate quarry and treated terracotta tiles or where wider joints are required. Suitable for external installations and available in 10 colours.

SURFACE PREPARATION

The grout joints should be thoroughly cleaned and dry to expose an even surface. The joints should be at least5mm wide. If regrouting grout depth should be half the width of the joint to a minimum of 5mm. It may be necessary to remove excess adhesive from the joints. When grouting porous or unsealed tiles dampen tiles and joints with clean water before grouting

 

MIXING

250mL potable water (or Megalastic) required per 1kg grout (1L per 4kg)

1. add liquid to suitable clean container
2. mix powder into liquid with mechanical stirring
3. mix until smooth and the consistency of toothpaste
4. allow to stand for 2 minutes before using

 

Use ASA Megalastic as a total water replacement if improved water resistance or flexibility is required.

Always add the powder to the water. When mixing large amounts use a drill with suitable mixing paddle designed for the task.

 

APPLICATION

1. Apply the mixed grout with a rubber squeegee (or other suitable grouting tool). Work well into the joints.

2. Allow the grout to become firm in the joint. Avoid washing off too early as the grout will not have enough strength to resist     pulling out of the joint. As an indication grout is ready to wash off only when the grout in the mixing bucket is stiff.

3. Wash off excess grout from the face of the tiles with a damp (not wet) sponge when the grout joint has firmed.

4. Remove grout haze from the face of the tile by polishing off with a soft cloth after the joints are dry.

 

ASA Sanded Grout is only recommended for joints at least 5mm wide. For joints narrower than 5mm use ASA Coloured Grout. Clean up can be made easier if a small amount of methylated spirits is added to the wash up water (eg 1 cup into 20 litres water).Take care to ensure that the minimum amount of water is used during clean-up. Excessive washing can cause the grout to be washed out of joints and/or to be weakened.

 

All workmanship must be carried out in accordance with AS3958-2007 and good workmanship practices

 

CURING

Allow adhesive to cure for a minimum of 24 hours (when tile work is firm) prior allowing foot traffic. Do not tile if temperatures are likely to drop to below 5°C or exceed 30°C. For temperatures below 20°C allow the adhesive to cure for an extended period of time. If uncertain check to see if the adhesive has set before allowing foot traffic or grouting.

 

COVERAGE

2kg of grout will cover approximately 1m² for 10mm joints. Refer to coverage chart for more details. Grout coverage will vary depending on joint variations installation conditions and technique. Always allow 10 – 15% extra to account for wastage.

 

CLEAN UP

Clean tools and equipment with warm water and detergent prior to product curing. Cured product may require mechanical removal.

 

POT LIFE

2 hours at 22°C and 50%RH.

Do not add additional water after initial mixing. If product stiffens remix to restore workability. Discard and mix a fresh batch if the material remains stiff after remixing.

 

SETTING TIME

24 hours at 22°C and 50%RH

 

STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Unopened bags can be stored for up to 12 months in a cool dry and weatherproof environment. Bags must be stored off the floor

IMPORTANT NOTES

 

 

• Only suitable for grout joint widths between 5 and 15mm.

• Do not apply the product in temperatures of below 5°C and above 30°C.

• This product is not suitable for use as an expansion joint and so will not replace the need for specialised movement joint materials.

• Ensure expansion and isolation joints are incorporated into the tiling system in appropriate locations. Any joints in the substrate should be appropriately carried through the tiling and grouting systems.

• Absorbent tiles should be tested for staining prior to grouting.

• Not recommended for polished porcelain or tiles that are easily scratched

• Colours may differ due to climatic and site conditions mixing ratios installation methods and surface textures. Whenever possible use grout from the same production batch and grout adjacent areas on the same day

• Use the minimum quantity of water when cleaning grout off tiles. Avoid excessive water use as this can wash out the grout or weaken the overall grout strength (by lowering the water to cement ratio).

• Never retemper mixed grout with additional water. If grout stiffens in the bucket remix only. Discard and replace with a fresh batch if paste remains stiff after remixing.

• When grouting porous faced tiles (such as unglazed terracotta) take care to ensure the grout does not absorb into the face of the tile.

• Porous tiles or joints may cause the grout to dry out prematurely. To limit this dampen the grout joints immediately before grouting ensuring they are damp but not wet. Alternatively seal the edges of the tiles with Megalastic (or similar suitable product). Take care to ensure all excess liquid is removed before grouting.

• Care should be taken to ensure the minimum amount of water is used during mixing and clean-up. Excessive water use can lead to weakened grout as well as colour variations.

 

All workmanship (including movement joints) must be carried out in accordance with AS3958 and good workmanship practices
